Configuring WinGate v2.1d with Arescom Apex 1100 Personal Router

WinGate is a proxy server firewall software package that allows you to share a single (or multiple) Internet connections with an entire computer network. The WinGate software consists of a server component, which is installed on the computer with the modem or other Internet connection, and a client component, which is installed on the other computers on the network.

With WinGate you can use a single Apex 1100 Personal router to share a single user account with two (or more) Windows 95 PCs.

You can find the WinGate installation guide at http://wingate.deerfield.com/helpdesk/ .In the example they use the private IP address range of 192.168.0.1 through 192.168.0.255 for Class C. We basically follow the range to configure the Arescom Personal router.

Arescom Apex 1100 Personal router key configurations

• Go to Apex Manager > Advanced > LAN Interface > LAN IP.
• Choose by selecting the radio button of "IP Master mode".
• Uncheck the box "Use Default IP Address and Subnet Mask".
• Type IP address of "192.168.0.3" and Subnet Mask "255.255.255.0".
• Check the box "Disable IP Address assignment of LAN PCs"
• Click Apply then Finish.

PC One (the one you have WinGate program installed) key configurations

• IP address: 192.168.0.1 and Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0.
• Gateway: 192.168.0.3.*

*The Gateway setup is very important. WinGate suggests that you leave the default gateway blank. But in order to make the WinGate to work with Arescom's Apex 1100 Personal Router, you have to assign the default gateway. The default gateway address is the IP address of the Apex 1100 Personal Router.

In WinGate's GateKeeper, double click DHCP Service on the right.

• Click on DHCP Mode Tab. Select "Semi Automatic". Have all three options selected. Click OK.
• Click on DHCP Settings. Select Global Options.
• Under DHCP Settings, move "Router" to the right. Double click on it. Insert IP address of "192.168.0.3". Click Add, and click OK.
• Under DHCP Settings, move "DNS server" to the right. Double click on it. Insert IP address of the DNS you obtain from your ISP, or use "131.107.1.7", which belongs to Microsoft. Click Add, and click OK.

In WinGate's GateKeeper, double click "WWW Proxy Server" on the right.

• Click on Interface Tab. Select "Connection to be made out on the following interface only. Choose the one of "192.168.0.1" by pressing down the arrow. This setup appears to have the best performance regarding connecting speed.
• Apply the same procedures to other services on the right.

PC Two (a WinGate Client) key configurations

• In your Ethernet card TCP/IP property setup, select Obtain an IP address automatically and click OK to accept this choice, and then OK in TCP/IP setup. Reboot the PC when prompt.

Note: Arescom's Flash 200 works perfectly with WinGate. Just follow WinGate's installation guide.
